Default To cat or not to cat

I'm new to this forum and I just bough a 2000 S10 2.2 auto. Love the truck, got a great deal. Now for my question. The guy I bought it from replaced the catalytic converter with a pipe. Should I make it stock again? I've read different stories on what it will do for power. Also, I'm not a tree hugger but I don't especially like my truck making more pollution than it is supposed to. What do you guys think?

Yeah, my check engine light stays on and I don't like that. I'll probably get a cat as soon as I feel like spending the money. The guy did put a high quality replacement pipe on it. I just wonder what effect it will have as far as power goes if I re-install the cat. Where do you find a $70 cat? Rock auto's are around $150.

Being a 2.2L 4-Cylinder, Automatic Transmission truck, the test-Pipe (the pipe that's in place of the old Catalytic Converter) is most likely hurting your performance, because it doesn't give the engine enough back-pressure, reducing scavenging.

Yes, less back-pressure can be a good thing in a lot of cases, but if you take away too much back-pressure, the exhaust can't scavenge the spent fuel/air combo as efficiently, which hurts performance.

I recommend installing a high-flow catalytic-converter, as well as a Flowmaster muffler...the series Flowmaster you choose depends on how you want the truck to sound: a 40-Series will have a fairly loud rumble, a Super44-Series will have a loud, deep, aggressive sound/rumble, a 50-Series will have the same rumble, but be a bit quieter, and there are many more X-Series Flowmaster Mufflers available (60, 70, 80, & More, so just go to their website [here] and listen to the Audio that accompanies each Series of Muffler.
