Default 91 S10 Temp and Oil Gauge Troubleshoting

Good eveing all,

Need some input on the following issue. First my temp gauge does not work anymore. I changed out the sending unit because it seemed the easiest thing to try first. That did not work. Second my oil gauge has seizures. I am not sure but I get the impression that the 91 has all electric gauges and as such I might be dealing with a wiring ground issue. Anyone have the schematic for the gauges or know where I can find one? Suggestions on how to begin are welcomed.

Thanks

Or your cluster is taking a giant dump on you........quite common on these trucks I'm sorry to say.

ive got the same problem on mine.. i got the 4.3v6..
ive replaced the sending units, and the gauge cluster.. my temp gauge still dont work, and my oil gauge some time works, then dont..
for my speedometer, ive replaced the VSS , still dont work..
after driving for a while ,itll start to work, but it wont go past 30mph, and as soon as i let off the gas pedal,it drops back to zero, hit the gas pedal, itll slowly climb up to 30 when im well over 30mph, let off the gas, drops back to zero....
the only gauges that work is my fuel and batt gauge.

i dont know what the problem is , ill be installing after market gauges..

If I knew where to find my old haynes manual I would scan the page with the cluster wiring diagram but I agree with J-me it's prob the cluster itself. Is it analog or digital?

Have you reseated the plug on the back of your cluster? I have had 5 of these trucks over the years and that has been the only common problems with the clusters that I have experienced.

Thumbs up

Finally got around to looking at this. First off I did not know there are 2 thermostats in my truck. There is one on the intake manifold which I am told talks to the computer, the other on the passenger side head near the exhaust manifold. I replaced both and the gauge now works. I initially replace the one on the intake not knowing there are 2 of them. NOTE: when replaceing the one in the head be prepared to loose antifreeze out the whole. For some strange reson I did not expect that and got a little damp during the effort..

The one in the head is for the gauge.

Well, I got the temp guauge to work. I ended up replaceing both the computer temp and the one in the passenger side head. Now the guague works fine..

So, now I need to do the same for the oil presure sending unit... I hear it is in a difficult place to get too....
